These tasters are played straight in on a two-track recorder, which means that the quality of the voice in particular is not as good as it should be. These will hopefully be replaced by more impressive versions at the earliest possible opportunity. Meanwhile, the listener can begin to get a rough idea of the scope of my repertoire.
Perligordino from Sonata in E (Paganini)- This has a typical Italian folk dance rythm, and shows the composer at his most inventive. The modulation into the tonic minor is most effective.
- Der Rote Safran
- A most moving Russian melody, rendered here in my own arrangement for ten trings. Mertz was one of the top virtuoso composers of guitar history, and is a major inspiration for my own decision to play a ten-string guitar.
- I will Give my Love an Apple (arr. Britten)
- Britten did far more than arrange his choice of folk song - he radically modernised the experience of the tune. Some find it distasteful, but this version is undoubtedly more mystical and true to the riddling text than any conventional harmonisation!
- Braes o'Balquidder/Wild Mountain Thyme
- A pickle o' puir folk music here, where the Scots and the Irish crossed pens at some time in the distant past!
